Technical Checklist for Fire Hydrant Selection
A fire hydrant is more than a network component. Its ability to provide reliable water flow under real operating conditions can directly influence firefighting efficiency, safety, and emergency response performance.
In an emergency, it's a life-saving device, and it must deliver the required flow, instantly and reliably.
But how can you be sure the hydrant you select will perform under pressure?
Here’s what you really need to check:
1. Know the actual pressure at the installation point
Don’t rely on the system’s nominal pressure. During emergencies, especially if multiple hydrants are opened, pressure can drop dramatically. Ask for the residual pressure under expected peak flow conditions.
2. Understand the hydrant’s internal head loss
Even certified UL/FM hydrants can differ significantly in internal flow performance. Some designs cause much higher pressure loss than others. Request a pressure loss vs. flow curve (e.g. for 1000–1500 l/min).
If your hydrant consumes 1 bar at 1500 l/min — and the system only delivers 2.5 bar — that’s a critical issue.
3. Check how easily it can be opened under full pressure
In a real emergency, speed and simplicity are key. If the hydrant requires excessive torque or special tools, it could cost valuable time. Verify the torque requirement to open under pressure.
4. Consider elevation and network profile
Is the hydrant at the highest point of the line?
Is there a risk of air locking, vacuum, or unstable pressure behavior?
Make sure the setup ensures stable and safe operation.
Bottom line: Don’t stop at approvals or datasheets.
Always request:
- Real flow/pressure performance curves
- Torque values under pressure
- Field feedback, if available
A hydrant may look the same on paper — but its field performance can be dramatically different.
